Lactation Counseling

Becoming a parent is one of the most profound and joyous moments of life!

For many it can also be exhausting and daunting. Even the most natural events, like feeding, can sometimes pose a challenge.

Since ancient times, mothers around the world have had built-in support from their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts. They did not have to seek out help when needed as it was all around them. Breastfeeding was not questioned; it was the only way to feed a baby.
Our modern society has created an atmosphere less conducive to motherhood. Many new parents find themselves without an adequate support system and if problems arise, they may not know where to look for help. Lactation professionals offer caring and skilled guidance when questions or challenges arise.

Lactation counseling and craniosacral therapy can work symbiotically in supporting the family unit since CST offers baby (and baby’s family!) the opportunity to unwind and release tension. The combination also offers a unique avenue for mothers and babies to heal simultaneously and has an enormous impact on the breastfeeding experience.

FAQ’s

Will breastfeeding hurt?

The strength of a baby’s suck may be a little surprising at first!
But breastfeeding should not be painful. If you are experiencing pain, you may need help with positioning. A lactation specialist can help with this and other troubleshooting.

It feels like my baby is nursing all of the time! Is this normal?

Infants breastfeed a lot! The more your baby nurses, the greater your milk supply and the healthier your baby will be. If your baby still seems hungry after feeding or is having digestive troubles, please consult a lactation professional.

How do I know if my baby is getting enough breast milk?

Your baby will have lots of wet and soiled diapers if she/he is drinking enough. She/he will also seem very relaxed and content after a feeding. If you are not seeing soiled diapers, or baby is fussy after feeds, please see a lactation specialist.

Why would my baby need craniosacral therapy?

Adjusting from the womb to the world is a big transition for baby! CST can help with this. It is also especially helpful if mother/baby have had a difficult delivery or if baby is having feeding issues or other physical/emotional unease.

How does CST help babies?

Babies have less barriers than adults and therefore are very responsive to healing touch. Babies who have been through a challenging labor, who are having difficulties breastfeeding, who are colicky or otherwise not seeming relaxed, can greatly benefit from CST. It is also wonderful for a baby who has not had an especially difficult entry to adjust from the seclusion of the womb to the outside world.

Will my baby/child like CST?

Generally, children are shy about having a treatment at their first visit but I work patiently and lovingly to establish a warm and trusting connection with them. After their initial visit, they enjoy returning and often ask their parents to bring them to my office! Babies and children usually feel very at ease during a session and following.

I am happy to do home visits for newborns in the Berkshire area.
